How To Avoid a Scamsmith: Common Locksmith Scams to Look Out For

Unfortunately, like every industry, locksmithing is full of scamsmiths. These unsavory characters pray upon your misfortune. There are a few key things to look out for that can help you spot a scammer.

The Switcher

This is the guy that will show up in an unmarked car, take one look at the lock and say something like “ohhhh this is high security, we HAVE to drill it”. The price you were quoted on the phone suddenly jumps to $400. Almost certainly, your lock is a standard lock probably found at home depot and is definitely not a high security lock. Now, not every lock can be picked. Just because they say they have to drill it does not mean they’re scamming you. Sometimes locks are worn or seized to a point that picking them is not practical or possible. The best case scenario here is to ask how much it’s going to cost before they start drilling. Better yet, just clarify the exact pricing on the phone prior to booking.

The Pinner

These guys operate very similar to The Switcher. They’re a little more sneaky though, they’re charging per pin they pick. The price you get on the phone is for a one pin lock, but they just don’t tell you that. They arrive, tell you “ohhh this is a six pin lock”, and suddenly the price is six times what you were quoted. Again, just clarify on the phone exactly what the price will be.

The Service Caller

For only $15 we’ll come to your door!! Yeah. No. Not happening. That’s exactly what they’ll do. They’ll show up for $15 alright, but that’s $15 just to come say hello. Now they’re there, you’re cold and want to go in your home. You cave, and pay their outrageous price.
