What Are the Three Main Types of Locksmiths?

When it comes to locksmithing, some may specialize in a particular part of the field. Some are more generalists and will cover a vast array of things. Today we’ll cover the three main specializations and how they differ from each other.

Residential Locksmith

Every home has a lock. Residential locksmiths generally tend to focus on rekeying, and opening up residential homes. Most homes are wood frame construction, and pose an easier entry into the trade. Most apprentices will start in residential, as it provides the simplest work and power tool use. A residential locksmith must have a great lockpicking skill set, as it will be the majority of what a residential locksmith does.

Commercial Locksmith

When it comes to businesses, we start to see things like high security keyways, and master key systems. This is when a locksmith will start to need a greater skill set, and must be well versed in a wider range of materials, such as drilling concrete, cutting out steel, and astragal installation. A commercial locksmith needs to be very comfortable using power tools, where a residential locksmith can get by with just a drill.

Automotive Locksmith

These guys are the wizards. Programming vehicle keys and remotes can be the most aggravating part of the trade. While commercial locksmithing can be physically demanding, automotive locksmithing is mentally draining. Mainly because there is such a vast quantity of different vehicle manufacturers and models over many decades. To top it all off, almost none of them are the same. Even within the same year of a model there can be differences in how a key can be programmed. Treat these guys like Gandalf, cause they could be saving you hundreds on a tow truck and a trip to the dealership!
