From Sticks to Floor Locks: The Different Ways to Secure Your Sliding Doors

When it comes to sliding doors, securing them is a bit of a pain. There are really only three good options when it comes to sliding doors. You can get a keyway inside the handle, a floor lock, or a really good stick. Yeah. A stick. Unfortunately these doors are really not made with security in mind, and at the end of the day they’re a giant pane in the… glass.

The Locking Handle

These are the best looking. A nice little keyway right in the handle. Lifts the little hook latch up, and retracts it down. However, they tend to break with excessive use. Just like grandpa they get a little limp, and the door doesn’t lock great. If this is a main entrance to your basement suite (yeah, we see you cheapo landlords), be prepared for your lock to fail. They always do. They’re really not intended to be used this way.

The Floor Lock

Solid option, not great for someone with disabilities though. You have to reach the floor to operate the lock. These generally get installed on the side of the door and the bolt extends down into the track. This also means you might end up with moisture or liquids making their way down into the framing, which is not great. These definitely outperform the handles, but you can only use them from the interior side, so not great for an entrance.

Ol’ Sticky

Good Ol’ sticky. Made from an old hockey stick, lumber, or hey even a nice piece of steel. Can’t open the door if the track is blocked by a nice rigid stick! Super easy to use, simply remove the stick to open the door. Want to lock it again? Slap ol’ sticky back into the track! Again, use from the exterior is not really a thing, but hey, it's probably the most affordable option that you can install yourself!

Summer is just around the corner, it's time to get that patio in order so you’re ready for those red solo cup parties! Just want someone to take care of that annoying sliding door lock for you? Give us a call today or check out our Installation and Repairs page for more information.
