What is a Mortise Lock?

A mortise lock is what you find on most commercial store front. They’re a little bit different than you’re usual deadbolt, they kind of look like a VHS tape, or a metal remote control. A mortise lock has a threaded lock cylinder, and comes in three main variants. A deadlatch, a deadlock, and a hookbolt.

Deadlatch

A deadlatch is used on a commercial door where you want the door to remain locked from the exterior, but have free egress from the interior, without having to manually lock the door over and over. Ideal for somewhere like a jewelry store that might buzz you in.

Deadlock

A deadlock is used as a more permanent locking solution, such as say a grocery store. Where you’re not as concerned about people coming and going all day, so the door can remain unlocked, and then lock up at the end of the day.

Hookbolt

A hook bolt is similar to a deadlock, except it’s for automatic sliding doors. Instead of a straight bolt, a hook protrudes from the mortise and grabs onto the other door, preventing it from opening. Again, ideal for when you want free access during operational hours, and locked when you’re closed.
