What is a Deadbolt?

A deadbolt or deadlock is a type of lock found on almost every house in North America. It’s the lock you use to secure your home, and sometimes your business. The distinct difference between a deadbolt and other door hardware such as a lever or knob, is the bolt cannot be slipped like a latch, and greatly improves your security.

When it comes to deadbolts you have three main types. You have a traditional mechanical deadbolt, a double cylinder, and an electronic deadbolt. The traditional variant is what you would find on your typical home, such as a Schlage B560. A double cylinder is used to separate two suites, such as a basement suite from the main dwelling, or two hotel rooms. Lastly an electronic deadbolt adds a keypad, and with newer electronic deadbolts the ability to program and unlock your door from your smart phone.
