Choosing between Emtek & Weiser for Your Home's Security

The debate between Emtek vs Weiser door hardware is a debate between quality versus affordability. While Emtek manufactures a far superior product, it also comes with a steep price tag. Justifying this price tag is not as simple as “well this one is made better so choose this one.” Emtek undoubtedly produces an elegant and timeless line of locks that will last a lifetime, whereas Weiser produces locks that are more in tune with a rental unit or a home full of teenagers.

About Emtek

Emtek door hardware is the entry point for Mansion level hardware. If you’re planning to keep up with the Jones’ this will be your starting point. There are, however, some drawbacks to such flagrant beauty. Many pieces of new Emtek hardware, and even the old ones, have a fatal flaw in their design. That is that they have a single clip holding them together. That’s not a big deal if you’re as ladylike as a Duchess or businessman with a firm but controlled hand. However, if you have a house full of rowdy teenage boys, Emtek is not for you. One crank of a rambunctious Monster Energy fueled hockey fiend, and your beautiful decor will be destroyed. This means it may also not be the right choice for a rental unit, or AirBNB.

About Weiser

Weiser on the other hand produces a product that will withstand most of what any adolescent young man can throw at it. That’s not to say they should be hanging from the levers like an orangutan, but they’ll withstand wear and tear of a more rustic lifestyle. This also makes them a more ideal piece of door hardware for a rental unit or AirBNB. This being said, we would still encourage utilizing a Weiser product other than SmartKey (that’s a topic for a whole different discussion.)

Emtek vs. Weiser: Who's the Better Choice for Your Home's Security?

When it comes to the actual security of your home, there is not a huge difference. Weiser and Emtek both utilize keyways commonly found in North America, and they both come in various grades. The baseline for Emtek is a bit higher than the baseline for Weiser, but neither is going to amount to a high security lock. Emtek can, however, be potentially fitted with a high security cylinder, whereas the Weiser Smartkey line is not compatible with any high security keyway currently available. For this one, we’ll give Emtek the slight edge if you spend a little more money for the better restricted keyway.

Conclusion

Emtek and Weiser are two fantastic brands for residential door hardware. It really boils down to what is within your budget, and what type of living conditions the lock will face. I personally appreciate the overall build quality and aesthetics of Emtek more, but I would still not put it on a door that’s going to be facing off against the local Bantam team.
